Irresponsible And Hazardous Drinking Leads To Mental Health Issues And Depression, An Enabling Spouse, And Motivation For Beneficial Change
It took quite a few years but Sarah eventually made up her mind that she had enough with her husband's careless and hazardous drinking. She was sick and tired of seeing Keith come home early in the morning from drinking instead of spending quality time with her and their son and daughter. She was also sick and tired of the DWI Keith recently got. Furthermore she was sick of making reasons for her husband when he couldn't show up for work due to his excessive and hazardous drinking. In a similar manner, she was nervous about the fact that their relationship was deteriorating due to Keith's careless drinking. And lastly she was sick and tired of the precarious financial situation into which he had placed his family due to his excessive and abusive drinking behavior.
One Thursday evening when Sarah was pondering what she could do about her husband's careless drinking, she got to the point that she honestly had to do something to cut into the negative cycle of Keith's careless drinking behavior. So Sarah looked on the Internet under "alcohol rehab" and discovered more than a few rehabilitation clinics that were all located less than forty-five miles away from where she and Keith lived.
When Sarah called each treatment facility she introduced herself and stated that her spouse was manifesting careless drinking behavior. She also said that her husband had an excellent health insurance at work and that inpatient or outpatient alcoholism treatment would be covered if a doctor in the company health network prescribed the rehabilitation.
After listening to Sarah discuss her husband's abusive drinking, the therapist in an encouraging but firm way explained to Sarah how she more likely than not contributed to her spouse's excessive and abusive drinking through the years. How? Essentially by minimizing his drinking behavior rather than letting him suffer the results of his careless drinking behavior.
Stated in a slightly different way, the counselor told Sarah that she may have been unintentionally enabling Keith's unhealthy and excessive drinking behavior. The psychologist also underlined the fact that Sarah would not be able to control her husband's conduct. With the support and guidance of the treatment team at the healthcare clinic, conversely, she would not only be able to learn how to avoid contributing to Keith's abusive and hazardous drinking but she would also be able to learn how to encourage him to schedule an appointment at the treatment clinic so that he could discuss his unhealthy and excessive drinking behavior with a psychologist.
The good news was that after Sarah discussed this with Keith and he saw that she was serious, he told her that he had been extremely anxious about his abusive drinking behavior and that he was somewhat comforted to know that Sarah wanted to do something constructive about his abusive and hazardous drinking behavior. Consequently, he made an appointment to see a healthcare practitioner at the local alcohol treatment clinic.
While simply calling a treatment program does not guarantee that a person's abusive and hazardous drinking behavior will become a non-issue or that a person will automatically be more willing to learning about alcohol abuse facts, making an appointment is certainly a necessary aspect in the rehab process. And since Keith wanted to learn more about alcohol abuse statistics, about getting professional assistance for his hazardous and careless drinking, and about alcohol abuse and alcoholism the likelihood of a successful recovery was greatly increased.
