An Impulsive High School Student Exhibits A Number Of Alcohol-Related Difficulties, Gets Removed From School, And Has To See The School Therapist
Stephen was a fifteen year old high school sophomore who was exhibiting several alcohol-related problems at school. Consequently, the principal explained to him that he had to see Miss Pender, the school therapist, before he would be allowed to come back to class.Later that day when Stephen went home after school, he had to explain his school situation to his parents. His parents were "relatively old fashioned" and told Stephen that getting kicked out of school was not a doable educational game plan. They informed Stephen that failing to graduate from high school would most probably be like a lead weight around his ankles that could quite possibly impair his educational attainment for the rest of his life. Not only this, but Stephen's Mom and Dad were very displeased that he was drinking in the first place and drinking with his peers in the second.
It was clear that his Mom and Dad were 100% in agreement with Stephen's principal and told Stephen that he needs to see Miss Pender, the school psychologist. After his discussion with his Mom and Dad, Stephen in the end agreed to see Miss Pender the next day. So Stephen phoned the school and made an appointment to see Miss Pender the next morning.
When Stephen went to see Miss Pender, she without pause reviewed all of the alcohol-related problems Stephen had gotten into and asked him if he knew why his recent alcohol-related behavior made the school administrators uneasy.
Quite truthfully, Stephen wondered why the principal suggested that he see a school therapist. As he expressed to Miss Pender, why should he see a professional counselor about his drinking behavior? Because nearly all of his peers drink about as much as he does, essentially, drinking is no big thing. Stated another way, if nearly everybody is drinking, why is this such a big deal?
In short, Stephen's involvement with teenage alcohol abuse was starting to foil his ability to conduct himself like an accountable young man. As stated by Miss Pender, "Just because most of your friends drink wine, hard liquor, wine coolers, or beer does not mean that it is right for you."
Fortunately, Miss Pender was extremely well prepared for her appointment with Stephen. She showed him research studies and reports she had highlighted that listed various drinking facts and statistics that applied to most people in general. Then she showed Stephen a lot of information that applied chiefly to adolescents.
After Miss Pender conveyed the aforesaid teenage alcohol and teen alcohol abuse statistics and facts, it was apparent that what Miss Pender taught Stephen was a real source of revelation for him. Why? Because for the first time in his young life, someone not only took the time to explain the short term and the long term outcomes of alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency, but she also made the effort to support what she was saying with alcohol abuse and alcoholism facts and statistics that related to people in general, and particularly to underage drinkers.
Certainly, it was almost as if a light went on and Stephen instantly grasped why he should not be engaging in hazardous and excessive drinking with or without his buddies anymore. Stephen thanked Miss Pender for her concern and for the information she discussed and then accepted her reinstatement into class.
